Liu Yifei, who holds the title role in Disney’s forthcoming live-action “Mulan” remake, has come under fire following comments on the Chinese social media site Weibo.
Yifei, who is Chinese-American, posted comments supposedly supporting the Hong King Police Force who have been accused of using excessive force against protestors and journalists. Yifei reportedly wrote: “I support Hong Kong’s police, you can beat me up now. What a shame for Hong Kong. #Ialsosupporthongkongpolice#.”
A series of protests in Hong Kong has been happening for over four months now and are a response to legislation that would allow suspected criminals to be extradited to territories where it doesn’t have formal extradition deals including Taiwan, Macau and mainland China.
Earlier this week, 5,000 activists occupied Hong Kong Airport which caused departing flights to be grounded for two days. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has since suspended the bill.
A number of people have taken to Twitter to call out Yifei and have used the hashtag #BoycottMulan and encouraging people to not watch the film when it is released in March. Said hashtag became a trending topic.
