Filmmaker Niki Caro says that her upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s classic 1998 animated film “Mulan” will differ from the other films of this type as it won’t be a musical.
Speaking with EW, she says the aim is a “girly martial arts adventure” with an epic scale:
“I haven’t started yet so I can’t give you any real detail. But the budget and the location and the story [are] offering such scope to me for [an] incredible, muscular piece of girly martial arts extravaganza in China. And I can’t wait. I’ve got my little girl, she’s 9. We’re going to start learning mixed martial arts in preparation. From what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.”
The original animated film boasted two well-known songs – ‘Reflection’ and ‘I’ll Make a Man Out of You’ – sounds like neither will be included. The story follows a young woman must disguise herself as a man to take her dad’s place in the army. The plan is currently for a late 2018 release.
