MTV, filmmaker Jon Favreau and former “Smallville” showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar are all teaming to adapt Terry Brooks’ best-selling “Shannara” fantasy novels into a series.
Sonar Entertainment will produce the project which has scored a straight-to-series commitment so long as the network is happy with the script. The book series, which began in 1977, totals twenty-five books at present with another three coming next year.
The story is set several millennia after the destruction of our civilization. The descendants of the Shannara family are empowered with ancient magic and continuously reshape the future of the world.
Should it go ahead, the first season will be based on the second book in the series, 1982’s “The Elfstones of Shannara”. The book series is estimated to be the highest-selling un-adapted fantasy book series in the world.
Favreau will direct and executive produce the project alongside Gough and Millar.
