Marvel Studios have spent years teasing the arrival of Thanos with the Infinity Stones story arc unfolding over multiple movies so far. The DC Extended Universe now appears to be doing the same thing, albeit at an accelerated rate, with the arrival of Darkseid.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “JUSTICE LEAGUE” AND BEYOND
Heroic Insider reports that the DCEU’s equivalent of the six Infinity Stones will be three ‘Mother Boxes’ – three supercomputer cubes from Apokolips glimpsed twice in ‘Dawn’. The first was the Cyborg birthing scene, the second that deleted ‘Communion’ scene of Lex Luthor that also showed off what’s claimed to be the “Justice League Part One” villain Steppenwolf.
The site’s ‘El Mayimbe’ suggests it will established that the boxes were left behind thirty millennia ago by the New Gods when Darkseid lost a battle with the combined forces of Humans, Atlanteans, and Amazonians. The fallout from that war leads to ongoing tensions between Atlantis and Themyscira, story threads to be explored in the standalone “Aquaman” and “Wonder Woman” films.
‘League’ will see Darkseid’s general Steppenwolf coming to Earth to retrieve the three left-behind Mother Boxes – he will be the primary villain, though Darkseid appears at the start in a flashback. Cyborg will be instrumental in the plot as his cyber-body was created thanks to one of these boxes. Similarly it sounds like the Atlanteans and the Amazons each held onto one of the other two boxes.
We’ll find out more with “Wonder Woman” on June 2nd 2017, “Justice League Part One” on November 17th 2017, “Aquaman” on July 27th 2018, “Justice League Part Two” on June 14th 2019, and “Cyborg” on April 3rd 2020.
