Several more key quotes have come trickling out of the Star Wars Celebration convention over the weekend. Talking about the new “Star Wars Anthology” films, the official title being used by the upcoming “Star Wars” spin-off movies, LucasFilm’s VP of development Kiri Hart says:
“Star Wars as much as it is a set of characters… is a place that we can explore in terms of character, in terms of time frame… We really wanted freedom to do some films that would stand on their own – they can vary in scale, they can vary in genre, they can introduce new characters and new places, and they can still be Star Wars.”
Lucas film’s Kathleen Kennedy says the idea for these anthology films came from George Lucas himself: “It was really George’s idea, not only picking up the saga again – which he never envisioned he would do… he was really interested in exploring all the stories that might exist within the universe.”
The “Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One” film, the first title of the new label, comes from a story by ILM CCO John Knoll and, like the other films in this series, plans to explore the various shades of grey of this universe.
As reported yesterday, ‘Rogue One’ is a ‘New Hope’ prequel which will center on a Rebel Alliance mission to steal plans for the original Death Star. The concept trailer that screened at the panel has shown up in bootleg form online across Youtube. Hopefully Disney or Lucasfilm will release if officially in HD soon.
Also showing up at the convention was Darth Maul actor himself Ray Park who spoke with IGN and expressed interest in reprising his role of Darth Maul in a standalone film:
“I would love to be disciplined, like not eat anything for four months, and be shredded and do the whole tattoo body effect like you see in the comics and the novels. I’d love to do that! If Darth Maul was coming back, he should be topless, tattooed, bigger horns, robotic legs! I would love to do it!”
No plans for any of the other spin-off films beyond ‘Rogue One’ have been released.
