In a surprising move, Terrence Malick has announced the names and stars of the two films he plans to shoot back-to-back in 2012 – “Lawless” and “Knight of Cups”.
Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett will star in both films. Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett will be joining them in “Lawless” only while Isabel Lucas will be a part of the cast of ‘Knight’. Malick was already spotted shooting footage with Bale for one of the films back in September.
FilmNation is financing both films and is currently selling the rights to Malick’s still untitled project with Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams (previously titled “The Burial”) which he’s still adjusting in the editing room.
According to The L.A. Times several U.S. distributors have already made offers based on the script and some footage alone, but so far Malick has declined.
The story of that one follows a philanderer (Affleck) who begins an affair with a European woman (Olga Kurylenko) in Paris. Returning home to Oklahoma, he marries the European woman but when the relationship founders, he rekindles a romance with a hometown girl (McAdams) with whom he’s had a long history.
The script is said to be both more upbeat and commercially friendly than much of Malick’s previous work, but the footage still contains the auteur’s trademark visual finesse.
