If Spike TV’s Game Awards are the video game industry’s equivalent of the MTV Movie Awards, then the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences’ peer-based D.I.C.E. Awards are gaming’s Oscars.
The nominees for this year’s awards have been announced with fifty-six video games making the cut. Leading the charge was Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor” with nine nominations, followed by “Far Cry 4” with seven.
Also performing well were “Destiny” and “Hearthstone” with six each; “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” and “Monument Valley” with five each; and “inFamous Second Son,” “The Vanishing of Ethan Carter” and “Valiant Hearts: The Great War” with four each.
The Game of the Year award competition is fierce with “Destiny,” “Dragon Age: Inquisition,” “Far Cry 4,” “Hearthstone” and “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor” vying for the honor.
There’s also the new category this year of the ‘Sprite Award’ which is handed to essentially the most original, innovative and risk-taking game of the year. Noms this year for that include “The Banner Saga,” “Hohokum,” “Monument Valley,” “Threes!” and “Transistor”.
The awards will be handed out on February 5th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, with the event to be live streamed via Twitch.
