Julianne Moore, Ken Watanabe and Demián Bichir are all set to star in the film adaptation of Ann Patchett’s best-selling novel “Bel Canto” at A-Line Pictures and Depth of Field
The romance story is set against a backdrop of immortal music and mortal danger as Roxane Coss (Moore), a famous American soprano, travels to a military dictatorship in South America to give a private concert at the birthday party of rich Japanese industrialist Katsumi Hosokawa (Watanabe).
Just as a gathering convenes, the house is taken over by guerrillas, led by General Benjamin (Bichir) demanding the release of their imprisoned comrades. A month long standoff ensues in which hostages and captors must overcome their differences and find their shared humanity.
Paul Weitz (“Mozart in the Jungle”) will direct from a screenplay by Anthony Weintraub (“Tekkonkinkreet”). Weitz, Weintraub, Andrew Miano and Caroline Baron will produce.
