The first sprint in that marathon that is the 2016 awards race is the Gotham Independent Film Awards which took place tonight in New York. Going into the night it was Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” and Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” that had the most nominations.
Coming out of it though, “Moonlight” was the clear winner – picking up four awards including Best Feature, Best Screenplay, the Special Jury Award For Ensemble Performance, and the Audience Award.
Other honors included “O.J.: Made in America” taking best documentary, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” winning Best Breakthrough Series – Long Form and “Her Story” winning Best Breakthrough Series – Short Form.
On the individual honor front, Casey Affleck nabbed Best Actor for “Manchester by the Sea”, Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress for “Elle”, Anya Taylor-Joy won Breakthrough Actor for “The Witch” and Trey Edward Shults nabbed the Breakthrough Director Award for “Krisha”.
