Along with rousing hosting by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards also saw results that many film critics and industry types hope will be repeated tomorrow night at the Oscars.
Namely that Barry Jenkins’ celebrated film “Moonlight” dominated the awards, winning every category it was nominated in including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and the Robert Altman award for best ensemble.
A24, which distributed the film, also got to celebrate over another of their entries – horror title “The Witch,” scoring wins for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.
On the acting front Isabelle Huppert scored Best Actress for “Elle,” Casey Affleck nabbed Best Actor for “Manchester by the Sea,” Ben Foster won Best Supporting Actor for “Hell or High Water,” and Molly Shannon took Best Supporting Actress for “Other People”.
Finally, other winners included “O.J.: Made in America” for Best Documentary, “Toni Erdmann” for Best Foreign Language Film, and “Spa Night” scoring the coveted super low-budget John Cassavetes Award.
