Following on from his resounding success on the Fall film festival circuit with “Moonlight,” filmmaker Barry Jenkins is turning his attention to a different coming of age story.
Universal Pictures has set Jenkins to write the script for a film about the life of the first American Olympic female boxing champ Claressa ‘T-Rex’ Shields. The studio has already acquired Shields’ life rights and remake rights to 2015 boxing doco “T-Rex” which debuted on Netflix in the summer.
17-year-old Michigan fighter Shields won her first gold for the middleweight class in London in 2012 and a second in Rio this year. Jenkins will pen a sports movie with a female empowerment message.
Michael De Luca and Elishia Holmes are producing. Jenkins’ “Moonlight” will hit cinemas on October 21st.
