Fresh off the success in Toronto of his gay black coming-of-age drama “Moonlight,” writer/director Barry Jenkins looks to be re-teaming with producer Adele Romanski and Plan B for a new limited TV series based on Colson Whitehead’s bestselling 2016 novel “The Underground Railroad”.
The story blends history and fable to depict a mythical underground train that transports slaves across an alternate America. The action follows Cora, a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia, who boards the train on a harrowing state-by-state trip as she seeks true freedom. Meanwhile a notorious slave catcher is in hot pursuit.
The project is not to be confused with either WGN America’s popular drama series “Underground” which is a more realistic take on the actual underground railroad for slaves, or NBC’s mini-series musical “Freedom Run” which Stevie Wonder was to produce.
