American Family Association spin-off organisation One Million Moms is reportedly asking its members to get involved in a boycott of ABC’s upcoming “The Muppets” TV show which premieres this Tuesday.
The group’s core message is to “stand against the immorality, violence, vulgarity and profanity the entertainment media is throwing at your children.”
So far they’ve mostly been involved in boycotts involving gay celebrities (e.g.. Ellen DeGeneres), gay characters (eg. Marvel and DC Comics), and infamously criticised GEICO for a commercial which they claim suggested bestiality.
Now they’ve turned their attention towards “The Muppets” for a specific reason – the new series features a more adult tone and includes sex and drug related jokes. In a new e-mail posted on their official site, the group says:
“ABC hopes children watch the show and predict they would enjoy some of the humor, but 1MM would disagree. It is not the show it once was. ABC has ruined ‘The Muppets.’ How many parents want to explain the punchline of sexually charged jokes to young children?
Many parents unknowingly will let their children watch an episode only to find out its perverted nature too late, unless they are alerted ahead of time. 1MM and others need to get the word out to families to avoid this program at all costs.”
This isn’t the only new series they’ve targeted in recent times, the group is upset with FOX’s “Lucifer” for its glamorizing of Satan. Reviews for “The Muppets” pilot have been so-so so far, the show will premiere September 22nd on ABC.
