Miyazaki’s “Mononoke” Gets A Re-Release

Just under a month ago came word that in order to celebrate its 15th anniversary, director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s Oscar winning and critically acclaimed animated film “Spirited Away” would return to U.S. cinemas with a 400+ screen rollout.

That re-release, organised by Fathom Events and film distributor GKIDS, took place this past Sunday and Monday with an encore taking place this coming Thursday on an additional 200 screens.

Its been enough of a success that the companies are pairing again for a similar re-release of the other film that, along with ‘Spirited’, is considered Miyazaki’s greatest achievement – “Princess Mononoke”.

Plans are for screenings to take place on January 6th and another on January 10th early next year to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary. Like with ‘Spirited,’ the first of these will be of the subtitled Japanese version while the second will be of the English dubbed version.

Both screenings will include a screening of the 1995 music video of “On Your Mark” by Chage and Aska, directed by Miyazaki. Visit the Fathom Events website for the full list of participating theaters.
