Helen Mirren and Pete Postlethwaite are joining the cast of “Brighton Rock” for Optimum Releasing and StudioCanal says the trades.
Based on Graham Greene’s 1939 novel, the story has Sam Riley (“Control”) playing Pinkie, a young gangster who marries a waitress (Andrea Riseborough) to keep her quiet after she sees him commit a revenge killing.
Mirren and Postlethwaite will play Ida and Phil Cokery, a couple who try to save Rose and expose Pinkie. Rowan Joffe adapted the script and will direct.
The novel was previously adapted into a 1947 film starring Richard Attenborough and Carol Marsh. The new film will stick closer to the source material but change the time period from 1939 to 1964.
Shooting is scheduled to start on October 18th in Brighton and London.
