“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and iconic songwriter Alan Menken are set to team-up for a live-action “The Little Mermaid” film at Disney Pictures.
The project will serve as both an adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale and the 1989 Disney animated classic based on it. Miranda won’t write the script but he will supervise the story and the studio will hire a writer shortly. Miranda will also produce with Marc Platt, the pair also involved in Disney’s upcoming “Mary Poppins Returns” film.
The project is expected to use pre-existing songs from the cartoon along with some new material that Miranda and Menken will pen together. It’s familiar work for Menken who won two Oscars for his work co-writing the songs for the original film.
The project is different to Universal and Working Title’s “Little Mermaid” project which has Rebecca Thomas set to direct from a script by Richard Curtis. That project has Chloe Grace Moretz attached to star and is said to have a different tone.
