“Austin Powers” and “Shrek” star Mike Myers, who hasn’t appeared on screen since 2009’s “Inglourious Basterds,” is returning in an unexpected way.
Myers will serve as the host of ABC’s new revival of “The Gong Show” which Will Arnett is producing. In a twist though, Myers won’t be there as himself but rather as a new character named Tommy Maitland. Yes, Myers will be hosting the show entirely in character and under make-up as seen in the picture above.
Maitland is a seventy something British comedian with a long career that ranges the gamut from spaghetti westerns to obscure Australian game show hosting.
Arnett, Zach Galafianakis, Alison Brie, Andy Samberg, Elizabeth Banks, Joel McHale, Dana Carvey, Will Forte, Jack Black and Anthony Anderson will be among special celebrity guest judges on the revival which begins June 22nd.
The news comes as Myers has been talking up “Austin Powers” on its 20th anniversary and revealing to the trade he’d “love to do another,” but has reservations.
