Mike Colter has recently talked some more about his role as Luke Cage in Marvel’s two upcoming series for Netflix. Though he’ll topline his own “Luke Cage” series, he first appears in character in “AKA Jessica Jones” which is currently in the midst of production ahead of a release later this year.
Speaking with The List, he was asked if his work in “Halo: Nightfall” led to him scoring the part to which he said: “It couldn’t have hurt. And I really wanted the opportunity to do another physical role as there are only so many years you can do this kind of stuff.”
Speaking about the character, he reveals that his signature super strength and unbreakable skin will be a part of his appearance in ‘Jessica Jones’ which would suggest the experiment which gives him those abilities takes place before events in the series:
“We’re in the middle of shooting AKA Jessica Jones and Luke Cage is a very interesting character who just happens to have super strength and unbreakable skin. He’s a neighbourhood hero, very much linked to New York and Jessica Jones. It’s all part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but Luke Cage is a darker, grittier, more tangible character than Iron Man or Thor. He likes to keep things close to his chest, operate on the hush-hush. He has these abilities but he’s not sure how and when to use them. He’s a very nuanced character.”
In the comics, Cage is framed for a crime. To get time off his sentence, he participates in an experiment that ends up giving him super-strength and invulnerable skin. He then uses those powers to clear his name and help others. Colter’s Luke Cage will first appear in around half of the episodes of “AKA Jessica Jones”.
