Michael Shannon has been cast as George Westinghouse in the upcoming electricity titan rival project “The Current War” at The Weinstein Company.
The fact-based story is set in the late 1880s and follows how Westinghouse and rival Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) competed to create a sustainable electricity system and market it to the US.
Edison championed the use of a direct current for electric power distribution over an alternating current, which was backed by Westinghouse Electric and a host of European companies.
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”) helms from a script by Michael Mitnick. Timur Bekmambetov, Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch will produce and shooting aims to begin early December.
The project is not to be confused with Morten Tyldum’s “The Last Days of Night” which also chronicles the Edison-Westinghouse feud and begins shooting in February. That project, setup at Black Bear Pictures, stars Eddie Redmayne as the young lawyer tasked with defending Westinghouse after Edison wins the race to the patent office and sues his rival.
