Metacritic’s Top Films, Shows, Games Of 2017

With all the films opening in 2017 now out in U.S. theaters, Metacritic.com has unveiled what films, games and TV shows were the best of the year based on the aggregate scores of the top critics.

I’ve divided the lists into three sections – films, TV shows and major video games. Check out the scores below:

Best Films
This list does NOT include old film re-releases. Films also have to have over ten reviews to be considered, which is why some high scoring works are not included.

1. “Faces Places” – 95/100
2. “A Fantastic Woman,” “Dunkirk,” “Lady Bird” – 94/100
3. “Call Me by Your Name,” “Phantom Thread” – 93/100
4. “The Florida Project,” “Foxtrot” – 92/100
5. “EX LIBRIS: The New York Public Library” – 91/100
6. “I Called Him Morgan,” “Loveless” – 90/100
7. “Columbus,” “Uncertain” – 89/100
8. “In Transit,” “Rat Film,” “Quest” – 88/100
9. “Three Billboards…,” “The Farthest,” “Jane” – 87/100
10. “Baby Driver,” “Chasing Coral,” “City of Ghosts,” “God’s Own Country,” “The Red Turtle,” “The Shape of Water,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Strong Island” – 86/100

There’s also a tally of the movies most frequently mentioned at the top of individual film critics year-end Top Ten lists. On that front “Call Me by Your Name” scored the most mentions with 18, followed by “Get Out” with 15, “The Florida Project” with 14, “Lady Bird” with 12, “Dunkirk” with 8, “The Shape of Water” & “Three Billboards” with 7, “Phantom Thread” with 6, and a three-way tie between “Blade Runner 2049,” “Mudbound” and “The Post” with 3.

Best TV Series
The reviews for shows on the site are often for the first few episodes of a season, and so aren’t as reliable overall as the film scores:

8. “Veep: S6” – 88/100

10. “Broadchurch: S3,” “Dear White People: S1,” “The Deuce: S1,” “Silicon Valley: S4” – 85/100

There’s also a tally of the shows most frequently mentioned at the top of individual film critics year-end Top Ten lists. On that front “Twin Peaks: The Return” took the top spot with 18, “The Leftovers” came in second with 15, “Big Little Lies” had 6, “The Handmaid’s Tale” had 5, and “The Good Place” and “Better Things” had 3 each.

Best Video Games
Scoring for games on the site is something of a mess as episodic releases, DLC add-on packs and iOS games are often given their own scores. To keep the list reasonable, I’m sticking to full game releases only – no episodic content or DLC add-on titles:

1. “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” “Super Mario Odyssey” – 97/100
2. “Persona 5” – 93/100
3. “Divinity: Original Sin II” – 93/100
4. “Undertale,” “What Remains of Edith Finch” – 92/100
5. “F1 2017,” “Horizon Zero Dawn,” “Injustice 2,” “Lone Echo” – 89/100
6. “Cuphead,” “Nex Machina: Death Machine,” “NieR: Automata,” “Night in the Woods,” “Nioh,” “Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus” – 88/100
7. “Destiny 2” “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds,” “West of Loathing” – 87/100
8. “Axiom Verge,” “Hollow Knight,” “Observer,” “Resident Evil VII: Biohazard,” “Sonic Mania,” “Thimbleweed Park” – 86/100
9. “Assassin’s Creed Origins,” “Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle,” “Pyre,” “Project CARS 2” – 85/100
