Metacritic’s Top Films, Shows, Games of 2014

With all the year’s films now out in U.S. theaters, Metacritic.com has revealed what films, games and TV shows were the best of the year based on the aggregate scores of the top critics. I’ve divided the lists into three sections – films, TV shows and major console games. Check out the scores below:

Best Films

This list does NOT include old film re-releases. Films also have to have over a dozen reviews to be considered, which is why high scoring works like “Virunga,” “Big Men,” “Night Will Fall” and “Stand Clear of the Closing Doors” are not included.

1. “Boyhood” – 100/100
2. “Mr. Turner” – 95/100
3. “Leviathan,” “Selma,” “Two Days One Night” – 91/100
4. “Ida,” “The Overnighters” – 90/100
5. “Birdman,” “National Gallery,” “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya” – 89/100
6. “Citizenfour,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Last Days in Vietnam” – 88/100
7. “The Babadook,” “Force Majeure,” “The King and the Mockingbird,” “Life Itself,” “Particle Fever,” “We Are the Best!,” “Whiplash” – 87/100
8. “Ernest and Celestine,” “Manakamana” – 86/100
9. “A Most Violent Year,” “Snowpiercer,” “Stray Dogs,” “Winter Sleep” – 84/100
10. “20,000 Days on Earth,” “Gloria,” “The LEGO Movie,” “Love Is Strange” – 83/100

There’s also a tally of the movies most frequently mentioned by individual film critics in their year-end Top Ten lists. On that front the best films this year are:

1. Boyhood
2. The Grand Budapest Hotel
3. Birdman
4. Under the Skin
5. Whiplash
6. Selma
7. Ida
8. Nigthcrawler
9. Gone Girl
10. Inherent Vice

Not far behind were “Mr. Turner,” “Force Majeure,” “Goodbye to Language,” “Only Lovers Left Alive,” “The LEGO Movie,” “The Immigrant,” “Foxcatcher,” “Snowpiercer,” “Two Days One Night” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Best TV Series

The reviews for shows on the site are often for the first few episodes of a season, and so aren’t as reliable overall as the film scores:

1. “Game of Thrones: Season 4” – 94/100
2. “Louie: Season 4” – 93/100
3. “Rectify: Season 2” – 92/100
4. “Transparent: Season 1” – 91/100
5. “The Good Wife: Season 6,” “Masters of Sex: Season 2,” “Olive Kitteridge,” “Orange is the New Black: Season 2” – 89/100
6. “The Americans: Season 2,” “Hannibal: Season 2,” “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History,” “Sherlock: Season 3” – 88/100
7. “In the Flesh: Season 2,” “Portlandia: Season 4,” “True Detective: Season 1” – 87/100
8. “The Trip to Bountiful,” “Veep: Season 3” – 86/100
9. “The Affair: Season 1,” “Fargo: Season 1,” “Getting On: Season 2,” “Mad Men: Season 7,” “The Missing: Season 1,” “The Normal Heart,” “A Poet in New York” – 85/100
10. “Justified: Season 5,” “Silicon Valley: Season 1,” “Sleepless in America: Season 1” – 84/100

There’s also a tally of the TV shows most frequently mentioned by individual TV critics in their year-end Top Ten lists, which I think is actually a more reliable indicator. On that front the best shows on TV right now are:

1. Fargo (FX)
2. The Americans (FX)
3. True Detective (HBO)
4. Transparent (Amazon)
6. The Good Wife (CBS)
5. Mad Men (AMC)
