Meryl Streep is in talks to play Topsy, the cousin of Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) in the upcoming live-action feature “Mary Poppins Returns” for Walt Disney Pictures.
In the P.L. Travers book series, the character is named Topsy Tartlet and marries into the name Topsy Turvey. Lin-Manuel Miranda also stars in the film as a street lamplighter named Jack.
The story will take place in Depression-era London and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
Much of the team behind “Into the Woods” including director Rob Marshall along with producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt are behind the film which boasts a script by David Magee and new music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The film is targeting a December 25th 2018 release.
