Meryl Streep has signed on for a small but key role in Sarah Gavron’s upcoming drama “Suffragette” for Ruby Films.
Abi Morgan (“The Hour,” “The Iron Lady”) penned the script in which Carey Mulligan plays a young woman who becomes engrossed in the early feminist movement, turning to violent acts to bring about more change.
Streep is portraying celebrated political activist Emmeline Pankhurst who gives a big speech on women’s rights during a feminist rally in the film. The real Pankhurst founded several political organizations such as Women’s Franchise League and the Women’s Social and Political Union.
Filming is slated to begin on February 24th in the U.K.
