Mermaid Breaks Chinese Box-Office Records

As of Friday and just twelve days since its debut, Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid” has become the highest-grossing movie ever in China.

The Mandarin-language film broke records for first-day gross and so far has amassed $382 million in box-office so far and is expected to pass $400 million by this weekend.

Deng Chao, Jelly Lin, Kitty Zhang, Show Lo and Tsui Hark star in the film about a mermaid who falls for the evil business tycoon she’s been sent to seduce and assassinate.

Sony Pictures released the film in the U.S. yesterday and is expected to give it an international rollout later this year.
