Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (“American Beauty,” “Jarhead”) has announced he plans to adapt George Eliot 1871 novel “Middlemarch” reports The BBC.
Considered one of the greatest novels of all time, the book is set at the cusp of the Industrial Revolution and chronicles the life, loves, foibles and politics of the fictional English town of Middlemarch.
“My films so far have been about exploring these extraordinary other worlds, but now I’m moving into a phase when I’m coming home and able to direct work that’s closer to me” said Mendes recently.
Andrew Davies, who previously adapted the book into a 1994 BBC mini-series, is currently writing the script. Mendes will start directing next year once he wraps work on “Revolutionary Road.”
