Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, Sir Ian McKellen and James Corden are all set to star in a film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running musical “Cats” for Working Title and Universal Pictures.
The play follows a tribe of cats called the Jellicles over the course of one night as they decide which of their group will ascend to the ‘Heaviside Layer’ and come back to a new life. It features numerous notable songs including “Memory,” “Mr. Mistoffelees,” and “Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats”.
The fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history and the sixth-longest-running in London’s West End, the original musical has been translated into more than twenty languages and is estimated to have grossed more than $340 million to date.
Tom Hooper (“Les Miserables,” “The King’s Speech”) is set to direct the film, which has been adapted by Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”). Hooper, Debra Hayward, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce.
Preparation has been underway for two years and filming is set to begin in the UK this November.
