Melissa McCarthy will star in the dark comedy film adaptation of Lee Israel’s memoir “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” for Fox Searchlight.
McCarthy will portray Israel, a successful profile writer who turned to deception after her work fell out of favor. Abetted by her loyal friend Jack, she began selling forged letters from deceased writers and actors. When they started to raise suspicion, she turned to stealing actual letters from library archives and selling them.
McCarthy takes over from Julianne Moore who was initially set to star but exited last year due to creative differences. “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” director Marielle Heller is attached to helm from a script by Nicole Holofcener.
Anne Carey, David Yarnell and Amy Nauiokas will produce and shooting begins early next year.
