Matt Damon is in the early stages of potentially playing fugitive billionaire commodities trader Marc Rich in “The King of Oil” for Universal Pictures.
John Krasinski’s production banner will develop the project with Krasinski producing and might eventually direct (though that’s far from certain). Allyson Seeger, Vincent Sieber and Uri Singer are also producing.
The film is based on Daniel Ammann’s no-holds-barred biography of Rich, one of the most controversial international businessmen of all time. The Glencore founder became the wealthiest and most powerful oil and commodities trader of the century until his 1983 indictments on 65 criminal counts including tax evasion. He was ultimately (and controversially) pardoned by President Bill Clinton.
Joe Shrapnel & Anna Waterhouse will adapt the screenplay. Damon and Krasinski previously worked together on both “Promised Land” and “Manchester By The Sea” in writing and producing capacities respectively.
