Some of the last major films of the year have been screened by critics and reactions for them are now popping up online.
The Christian Bale-led Dick Cheney biopic “Vice” screened for the press on Saturday, one of the last major screenings of the 2019 Oscar candidates, and reaction has so far been excellent – especially for Bale’s performance – with a lot of comparisons to Adam McKay’s previous major awards contender “The Big Short”. Reviews have yet to be published, only reaction pieces so far.
Similarly Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” has been screening the past few days and has emerged as an unexpected awards contender with guild screenings yielding lengthy standing ovations and emotional reaction which usually goes over well with Oscar voters.
While they won’t score with awards, both the upcoming sequels “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Creed II” have managed to get strong reviews. The “Wreck-It Ralph” follow-up sits at 92% (7.3/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, comparable to the first film, while “Creed II” stands at a soberer 73% (7/10) – very good but notably down from the first.
All these films are slated to open in the next five or so weeks.
