Mary J. Blige has signed on to star in the upcoming Netflix live-action series “The Umbrella Academy” based on the Dark Horse Comics title.
The story follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes including Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castaneda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Vanya (Ellen Page), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher).
The group are forced to work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.
Blige will play Cha-Cha, a ruthless and unorthodox time-travelling assassin who is sent to kill assigned targets. Her job is her life and, though she has a few gripes about the bureaucracy of her employers, it suits her sadistic and sociopathic tendencies well.
Jeremy Slater is adapting the script with Steve Blackman serving as showrunner and comic creator Gerard Way executive producing for Universal Cable Productions.
The role is Blige’s first regular foray into series television and comes hot on the heels of her best supporting actress nomination for her role in Netflix’s “Mudbound”.
