Marvel Surprises: Gauntlet In, Whedon Out?

With publicity for “Thor: The Dark World” in full swing right now, every press quote from Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige is being dissected and analysed for the tiniest bit of new information. Some have focused on “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” more though are asking about Marvel’s mysterious ‘Phase 3’ titles which will hit screens starting in 2016.

One of the surprises? Joss Whedon is NOT yet locked to oversee Marvel’s Phase Three plans as he is doing with the Phase Two films. Whedon’s contract with Marvel continues until June 2015 (a month after “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” opens), and ever the businessman Feige is keeping his options open. He tells Screen Rant:

“it’s still being determined. All of his efforts right now are in what he’s doing for us primarily, obviously, writing and prepping Age of Ultron but also in reading the drafts of the films in phase 2, watching early cuts to inform him where the characters are going to end up in the beginning of Age of Ultron and also to get his input and his wisdom into all of these. But right now it’s all about leading up to Age of Ultron.”

In other Phase Three news, talk is rising that the famed ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ from the comics (and glimpsed in “Thor”) will serve as the macguffin for Marvel’s Phase Three plans – in the way the ‘Tesseract’ was for the Phase One films. Feige was asked if the various macguffins seen so far are leading us up to the Infinity Gauntlet being a key element of “The Avengers 3”. His response:

“Well, I don’t know that I would spell it out that clearly, necessarily, but certainly fans of the comics could surmise that all of this is leading somewhere. That Joss’ decision to have Thanos turn around and smile for the audience at the end of Avengers, our reveal, was always the plan.”

In the comics, the villainous Thanos obtains the glove which gives the user God-like powers which he uses to destroy all of the Marvel superheroes.
