Speaking with TV Guide, actor Phil Morris talks more about his role as John Jones (aka. J’onn J’onzz) on “Smallville” this season.
The role of course is the Martian Manhunter, a character seen twice this season – once in a cameo from a distance and again this past week in the episode “Labyrinth”.
He may have the glowing red eyes and can fly, but he’s not green. Morris confirms there’ll be no make-up tweeks either – “I have a long leather [blue] coat, a black shirt and jeans.”
What’s his role on the show? “I’m Jiminy Cricket. My job on the show, as far as I can see, is to help Clark understand that he’s weakening himself by trying to be less than who he truly is. Other people can tell him that, but I’ve walked the walk. I’m a shape-shifter.”
Why wasn’t he in the previous week’s high rating special episode “Justice” which saw the formation of the Justice League? Morris says “All those characters in the “Justice” episode are very young, and they’d been on the show before, so the audience already knows them. They don’t know me yet, so I think it was smart of the show to keep J’onn separate. I’m a more mature presence, which will help ground the show.”
Finally he also confirmed he’ll be doing multiple shows this season.
