Mark Waters (“Mean Girls”) has come onboard to direct the “Bad Santa” sequel at Broad Green Pictures and Miramax, the news following word on Friday that Billy Bob Thornton is set to reprise his role in the followup to the 2003 pitch black holiday comedy.
The original starred Thornton as an alcoholic, sex-addicted, professional thief who disguises himself as a department store Santa Claus in order to rob shopping malls blind at night.
Waters steps into the helming role which Terry Zwigoff served in on the first film. Original castmembers Tony Cox and Brett Kelly have also closed deals to return alongside Thornton.
The project is being fast-tracked with Waters set to start shooting in January from a script by Johnny Rosenthal, Doug Ellin and Shauna Cross. Geyer Kosinski is producing.
A female lead is being sought and if all goes well the film will be out arond the year-end holidays next year.
