Mara Visits “Brooklyn”, Hirsch Goes “Down”

Rooney Mara is set to star in a $25 million film adaptation of Colm Toibin’s best-selling novel “Brooklyn” says The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950s, Mara would play a young woman torn between her family in Ireland and the American who wins her heart.

British novelist and screenwriter Nick Hornby (“About a Boy,” “High Fidelity”) is adapting the script for the project which is being assembled by much of the team behind 2009’s “An Education”. Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey will produce. Shooting will kick off in Spring 2013.

The announcement comes as those involved also prepare an adaptation of Hornby’s own novel “A Long Way Down” starring Toni Collette and Pierce Brosnan.

Pascal Chaumeil (“Heartbreaker”) helms the story which follows a quartet of suicidal people who meet on a building rooftop New Year’s Eve and form a surrogate family to help one another.

Word comes today Emile Hirsch has joined the cast, leaving only one of the four key roles still yet to be cast ahead of filming in the Fall.
