“Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” actress Rooney Mara are reportedly testing for the female lead role in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming “Star Wars” spinoff film due for release in December next year.
“The Theory of Everything” Oscar nominee Felicity Jones is also on the “want list” for the role apparently, but her commitment to Ron Howard’s “Inferno” may preclude that possibility.
The project is the first of numerous spin-off films set within the “Star Wars” universe. Disney intends to release this one between the release of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in December this year, and Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII” in December 2017. Josh Trank is linked as helmer of the second spin-off film in the works.
Testing took place in the U.K. in December, with further screen tests now set to take place in the United States.
Garry Whitta completed a first draft and left the project recently, with Edwards currently seeking a scribe for re-writes. A report came last week that Simon Kinberg would take over the writing, but that’s not the case apparently and he’s busy with several “Star Wars” commitments along with “X-Men: Apocalypse” scripting duties and “Fantastic Four” reshoots which he did re-writes on.
