Disney showed off thirty minutes of footage from select episodes of its upcoming live-action “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” over the weekend, and hosted a panel where some of the cast and crew were on hand to answer questions.
First up, production on the show’s second season has begun and actor Carl Weathers himself, who plays bounty hunter guild head Grief Carga on the show, will serve as a director next season alongside the previously confirmed Jon Favreau.
Full reviews for the series will come at a later date when the episodes are closer to airing. Dave Filoni helmed the pilot of the series which also stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito and Ming-Na Wen. Check out some of the reactions from journalists in attendance below:
“This is the Star Wars thing I’ve been waiting for! While I love the Skywalker saga, I’ve wanted to see new characters and places explored in depth which can only be done over multiple episodes in a series format. Cannot wait to see more of The Mandalorian” – Steve Weintraub, Collider
“Wow. #TheMandalorian is completely amazing. Saw nearly a half hour of footage from what I was told were the first three episodes. Whoever you think Nick Nolte is … the answer will surprise you. Also it looks as expensive as it is – they didn’t skimp with this one. Spaceships, creatures, etc all in full effect. Cannot wait for full episodes.” – Drew Taylor, Moviefone
“Saw 27 minutes of #TheMandalorian footage this morning. Always difficult to make sense of a bunch of disconnected scenes but it looks intense, surprisingly dark and very expensive. And not enough Werner Herzog.” – Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press
“Oh wow THE MANDALORIAN footage looks incredible. We saw IG-88 attacking, we saw Salacious Crumb being barbecued for a meal. And Werner Herzog as some sort of galactic gangster who has his own team Stormtroopers. Biggest takeaway for me from the Mandalorian footage was the Mandalorian riding a Dewback and that ROTJ era Scout Troopers are back on those era speeder bikes.” – Mike Ryan, Uproxx
“Disney just showed off 30 minutes of #TheMandalorian and it looks even better than I had hoped. I’m not usually a music guy, but what an incredible sounding score!” – Silas Lesnick, Coming Soon
“Just watched close to 25 minutes of footage from #TheMandalorian. It’s very cool and atmospheric – sometimes evoking the vibe of Rogue One (which I adore). The title character is instantly fascinating and there are great action and suspense moments, including some Predator vibes” – Eric Goldman, Get Fandom
“Reliving my childhood Saturday mornings watching Star Wars. The 30 so minutes of #TheMandalorian footage we saw was incredibly cool. The samurai-infused space western you’ve always wanted with an ice cold lead, a bunch of rad creatures, and a killer score ” – Rosie Marx, Nerdist
“Just saw 30 mins of #TheMandalorian. Uh…WOW. Feels more western than sci-fi – from the shootouts to the stand-offs to the vidalia onion stew a new droid character named “Gramps” is always doting over. We are entering a new phase of Star Wars and the future is looking bright!.” – Ben Mekler, Mortal Podkast
“Just saw almost 30 minutes of #TheMandalorian’s pilot episode. It feels like a thrilling return to the original trilogy era of Star Wars. It feels like a big scale movie, not a tv series. They are still keeping a lot of mystery with deliberate cuts in the footage. The score is awesome. Seeing @dave_filoni do live action Star Wars is everything I’ve wanted. I can’t wait to see more.” – Peter Sciretta, Slashfilm
“The Mandalorian” will premiere on Disney+ the same day the streaming service launches on November 12th with the second episode following three days later on November 15th.
