Last month came word that not only was filmmaker Taika Waititi helming an episode of the upcoming live-action “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian,” but he is also set to lend his voice to a role.
Speculation has been high that he’s playing droid bounty hunter IG-88 who seemed to be the character on screen in a photo snapped in Waititi’s recording booth. The character is a tall assassin droid who was one of the iconic bounty hunters seen in “The Empire Strikes Back”.
Now though, showrunner Jon Favreau has shot down that talk and tells EW the droid is not that character – rather its a new one named IG-11. Footage shown from the series at the Star Wars Celebration convention this past weekend showed the droid spinning around and killing a bunch of Stormtroopers.
“The Mandalorian” is slated to launch the same day as the Disney+ streaming service on November 12th and the publication’s Anthony Breznican says the plan is to air episodes weekly, no Day 1 seasonal bingeing (ala Netflix) possible, with only the first episode to be released on launch day.
