John Malkovich has signed on to star opposite Jude Law in “The New Pope,” the follow-up to Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Young Pope” for HBO and Sky.
It was previously said the series is NOT a second season of “The Young Pope” but rather a “second limited series set in the world of the modern papacy”. Law played Lenny Belardo, aka Pope Pius XIII, in “The Young Pope” and it’s unclear if he’ll reprise the role for this.
Malkovich is rumored to be playing the new pontiff and marks a rare small-screen leading role for the actor who mostly sticks to film. His last regular TV gig was playing Blackbeard in NBC’s short-lived pirate drama “Crossbones,” and he’ll soon be seen as Hercule Poirot in the mini-series “The ABC Murders”.
Production on “The New Pope” is scheduled to begin in Italy in November with Sorrentino, Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises penning the series. Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani will produce.
