“Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek will portray rock star and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the long-in-the-works biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” at Fox and New Regency.
“X-Men” director Bryan Singer will helm the project, making the announcement of his and Malek’s involvement. Anthony McCarten penned the most recent script draft, while Graham King will produce.
Born in Zanzibar and raised in India before moving to the UK, Mercury teamed up with Brian May and Roger Taylor to form Queen, the seminal 1970s rock band which remains one of the most famous in the world. Mercury ultimately died of AIDS in 1991.
Sacha Baron Cohen spent years attached to play Mercury but walked away from the project earlier this year.
