Disney’s fantasy sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” has knocked off reigning champ “Joker” from the top of the box-office this weekend.
The Angelina Jolie-led vehicle co-starring Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer pulled in $36 million for the three day weekend, missing early projections of approximately $45 million and opening only a little over half that of its predecessor. The film also snagged a further $117 million from 56 international markets.
“Joker” is now in second with a further $29.2 million this weekend, but even so it’s still going quite strong and has hit a domestic total of $247.2 million and a global total now at a highly impressive $737 million mark and is on track to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
The other newcomer was “Zombieland 2: Double Tap” which fared decently with a $26.7 million opening, up from the $24.7 million of its predecessor in 2009. “The Addams Family” came in fourth with a further $16 million, while “Gemini Man” was fifth with $8.5 million.
