Maggie Gyllenhaal Leads HBO Porn Drama

Coming off her acclaimed turn in “The Honorable Woman,” actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is returning to TV for “The Wire” creator David Simon’s 1970s/1980s porn drama “The Deuce” for HBO.

Gyllenhaal will produce the series and play a Times Square hooker named ‘Candy’ in the long-in-the-works project which begins filming next month in New York City. Her character has an entrepreneurial bent and is drawn into the fledgling porn industry.

James Franco also stars and produces the project which deals with the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York at that time.

The action explores the rough-and-tumble world that existed in midtown Manhattan and the mob controlled and volatile sex industry – until it all came crashing down following the rise of HIV, cocaine-induced violence and skyrocketing real estate prices.

Simon, George Pelecanos, Nina K. Noble and Richard Price will executive produce and Michelle MacLaren is on board to direct the pilot.
