Macdonald Helms Bobby Fischer

“The Last King of Scotland” and “Touching the Void” director Kevin Macdonald has been tapped to direct “Bobby Fischer Goes to War” reports Variety.

The drama follows the upstart chess prodigy who reached grandmaster stature at 15, and became a global celebrity at 29 after defeating the world’s best player Boris Spassky in 1972, the only American to win that title.

Fischer, who died earlier this month, became known in his later years for outspoken comments, anti-Semitic rants and an eccentric and reclusive nature.

Based on the book by David Edmonds and John Eidinow, Shawn Slovo penned the script and production will begin later this year.
