“Lady Macbeth” director William Oldroyd has come onboard to direct the crime thriller “Body Cross” at Focus Features.
The project was originally developed as a potential sequel to David Cronenberg’s 2007 thriller “Eastern Promises” with that film’s writer Steven Knight penning the script.
As plans for it stalled, the studio decided to use it to tell an original standalone crime movie meaning Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel won’t be returning.
The story follows a Russian agent who rises to become a London mafia boss’ trusted lieutenant and is soon instructed to assassinate one of his fellow countrymen. Knight has previously said he considers the script much better than the one he did for “Eastern Promises”.
Paul Webster, who worked with Knight on his 2013 Tom Hardy-led film “Locke,” is producing and filming could begin as early as February.
