Lucasfilm and Touchstone Pictures have announced a January 23rd 2015 release date for the Gary Rydstrom-directed animated feature “Strange Magic”. The project is described as a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Popular songs from the past six decades are weaved into this comedic tale of magical creatures – including goblins, elves, fairies and imps – who become caught up in misadventures due to a powerful potion.
The voice cast includes Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare. Marius de Vries (“Moulin Rouge”) serves as the film’s musical director and composer.
George Lucas penned the story and will executive produce, whilst Rydstrom, David Berenbaum and Irene Mecchi worked on the script. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and ILM, which previously worked on 2011’s “Rango,” are handling the animation.
The project comes as a surprise. A week ago it was rumored ‘Strange Magic’ was to be the subtitle for a “Frozen” sequel, turns out it’s an entirely original project that’ll hit very soon.
