“The LEGO Movie” directors and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have closed a massive nine-figure, five-year deal with Sony Pictures TV. The big selling point of the deal? The pair will develop a Marvel TV universe.
This shifts their overall deal from 20th Century Fox following a competitive bidding war between multiple outlets. The new deal will allow Lord and Miller to create and develop comedy, drama and animated projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming, along with supervising projects from other writers and developing television series based on Sony’s stable of Marvel characters.
Said stable includes Spider-Man and his foes, Venom, Morbius, Black Cat, Silver Sable, and the characters of Into the Spider-Verse. Television projects related to these characters will be produced in partnership with former Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal.
Lord and Miller said in a joint statement: “We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio. Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”
Lord and Miller previously worked with Sony on “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” “21 Jump Street,” “22 Jump Street” and Oscar-winner “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”.
