Rising young filmmaker Issa Lopez is teaming with the legend that is Guillermo del Toro on a werewolf western drama with Lopez directing and del Toro producing.
Lopez’s Spanish-language horror tale “Tigers Are Not Afraid” is currently in a limited release ahead of a larger rollout. Set against Mexico’s devastating drug wars, the story follows a group of orphaned children armed with three magical wishes, running from the ghosts that haunt them and the cartel that murdered their parents.
Of the project with del Toro though, Lopez tells EW: “We’re prepping a werewolf movie, a supernatural Western. It’s a werewolf-Western! I’m super excited. He has the script, I wrote it, he loves it, and we’re gearing up to make it.”
She goes on to say: “The thing is, there’s not really that many brilliant, brilliant werewolf movies. An American Werewolf in London is the big one. I think it’s time to revisit. It’s about revisiting the essence of what it is, which is trying to contain the beast in you. It’s as simple as that, and I think that’s perfectly relatable with humankind, and particularly the moment that we’re living in.”
No word on a production schedule or expected release plan for the title.
