Hugh Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine, “Logan,” opened to a massive $9.5 million Thursday night in previews. That bests both the $8.2 million of “X-Men: Apocalypse” and the $9.4 million of “Doctor Strange,” and more than doubled the $4 million of “The Wolverine”.
Estimates going into the weekend are that the film will gross more than $70 million in North America and a further $100 million overseas. Judging by this preview score though, an over performance with a domestic total in the $80 million range is quite possible.
The other wide newcomer this weekend, the Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer-led faith-based film “The Shack,” made just $850,000 in previews and is expected to gross $10-12 million.
