Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine in the R-rated “Logan” has proven a bigger hit than even those involved had expected.
The James Mangold-directed feature beat all expectations to take in $85.3 million at the North American box-office, and a further a near-record $152.5 million from 81 markets overseas in its opening weekend. That includes a whopping $46.2 million in China where it handily beat “The LEGO Batman Movie” which also opened to just $3.6 million.
That gives it a global launch weekend of $237.8 million. Domestically it’s the biggest opening of the year so far and one of the top showings of all time for an R-rated film or for a March release.
Glowing reviews and an A- CinemaScore certainly suggest repeat business will also be strong for the film which opened in first place in 80 markets and is the third-biggest debut for Fox International behind only “X-Men: Days of Future Past” ($172 million) and “Avatar” ($164 million).
