Filmmaker Joe Wright (“Pride and Prejudice,” “Atonement”) is looking to develop a live-action film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale “The Little Mermaid” for Working Title Films says The Hollywood Reporter.
First published in 1837, this incarnation of the tale of a young mermaid who gives up her life in the sea to love a human prince will be adapted by Abi Morgan (“Brick Lane”). This adaptation will be the first English-language live-action adaptation of the story.
Wright’s version is inspired by a recent children’s puppet theatre production at London’s Little Angel Theatre. It’s expected to be director’s next project once he wraps post-production on the thriller “Hanna” for Focus Features.
