As talk began to brew the other day that Lionsgate were considering cutting Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables down from a ‘hard R’ to a PG-13, the studio quickly hit back at such claims.
A rep tells Hollywood Elsewhere that the film “has always been conceived as an R-rated film, as Stallone himself has confirmed to other press outlets throughout the filmmaking process. There is not a PG-13 version of the film in the works, nor has there ever been. The MPAA R rating is official and final.”
Producer Avi Lerner mentioned that both a PG-13 and an R-rated cut of the $80 million action vehicle were being tested last year, a debate that obviously got lost as Stallone himself back in April said he “promises a hard R”. The modest performance of Lionsgate’s R-rated “Kick Ass” however has made them understandably jumpy.
